Mango the cat sits on the canteen wall every morning at 8:35 am. The wall is warm and the wall is his.
This morning the wall is empty.
Suki writes the time in her notebook, then starts.
“Did you see him yesterday?”
“After tea,” says Coco.
“Do you feed him?”
“He feeds himself. He supervises us.”
“Does he ever stay out all night?”
“Never.”
Pip arrives late, with plan four.
“A smell trail,” he says. “Cat food, gate to wall. He follows it home.”
He lays it walking backwards, so Mango can see his face.
The paper bin behind him is open. Pip sits down in it up to his knees, and the lid comes down on his head.
