It rains all night, so by morning the playground is one long puddle.
Suki finds the prints first. Small, muddy, four toes, up the steps and in at the door.
“A dog,” says Pip. “A big one. Watch.” He walks it for everybody, low and heavy, and sits straight down in the water.
Elvis counts the prints without being asked. “Nine. Then they stop.”
Suki writes EVIDENCE at the top of a clean page.
“It’s Mango,” says Coco.
“A cat,” says Suki. “Not the cat. Not yet.”
“It is the same cat either way.”
“Not on paper,” says Suki.
